TRACKS AND VISITOR FACILITIES

A major objective of the Trust is to enable people to use Mount Ngongotaha for recreation, enjoyment of the forest and for education at all ages.  Access to the forest had been a problem for many years.  The Trust was very fortunate that the local branch of Forest & Bird was able to use a legacy from the late Violet Bonnington to buy a small piece of land which provides a vital access link from the nearby Paradise Valley Road.   This is known as the Violet Bonnington Reserve (VBR).  The Trust works closely with Forest and Bird, and has placed
two composting toilets on the VBR.

The Rotorua District Council constructed a generous parking area on
the roadside adjoining the VBR.

A first priority for the Trust was to build a new track to link the VBR to the foot of the historic Jubilee Track, enabling public access all the way to the mountain summit.

The next major priority was to establish a high-standard loop nature walk on the lower slopes of the mountain.  This has been undertaken in stages, and is now complete.

The map below shows the track network as at May 2011.

Visitors are advised that, because of forest growth,
there is no view from the Mount Ngongotaha summit.
